Delicious, Inexpensive and Local Ingredients on the Menu at Community Health Day
For twenty years, the London InterCommunity Health Centre, alongside community health centres across the province, has organized a wide variety of community health day activities.
“There have been community art projects, local musicians, children’s choirs, blood pressure checks, fitness demonstrations… we certainly covered a lot of ground over the past twenty years,” says Anthoula Doumkou, Community Programs Manager and a long-time employee of the Centre. “Another popular component of the day, of course, has always been the free hotdog lunch.”
This year, the Health Centre decided to re-think the lunch menu. “Hot dogs are fine on occasion, but we really wanted to make use of locally grown or locally available ingredients that are healthy, delicious and inexpensive,” adds Doumkou, “We’ve partnered with the Western Fair Farmers Market, On the Go Organics, and Heritage Line Herbs to make a creamy tomato soup with fresh local dill to serve over the noon hour.”
Paired with the soup will be vegetarian wraps produced by the hospitality program at Ross Secondary School. Lemonade and healthy breakfast cookies made by the Chef Les Cooks are also on the menu.
Guests can win a copy of The Basic Shelf Cookbook, speak with a dietitian about food and nutrition concerns, participate in a Zumba fitness demonstration or join in an outdoor community art effort. The soup recipe, as well as the accompanying nutrition information, will be available, as will samples of fresh dill for those wishing to try the recipe at home.
Community Health Day activities take place April 30 from 11am – 1pm at 659 Dundas Street. Similar activities will occur at our second location at Unit 7 -1355 Huron Street from 10:30am – 12:30pm.
