2015 Assyrian Men’s Health Workshop

In this two day workshop, men who attended learned about Cancer Prevention and Diabetes Prevention and Self Management. They had great conversations and discussions with clinical providers about issues that impact men’s health, all within their own language. Contact the Health Centre if you would like health care professionals to come to your community to deliver health education.

2015 Men’s Health Workshop

The successful launch of our first Men’s Health Workshop for Arabic speaking men! The participants were impressed by the variety of topics, felt “illuminated with awareness” and found clarity in common health myths. Topics included LIHC services, emotional and mental wellness, smoking cessation, fasting safely with diabetes and reducing your risk of cancer. We will be offering more men’s and women’s health workshops to other communities as part of our larger health promotion strategy.

2015 Cultural and Creative Aging

Health Centre seniors participating in the Cultural and Creative Aging event at the Creative Age London Festival in Beacock Library. Our seniors demonstrated their cultural traditions through storytelling, expression and arts (photography, visual arts, knitting, stain glass, bead work). A wonderful celebration of achievements and talent amongst older adults in our community!

2015 Volunteer Appreciation Week!

This year our volunteers had the opportunity to participate in an adult CPR certification, a head and shoulder massage, a self care workshop and yoga.  There was a great turnout and all the volunteers were pleased with the activities, food, gifts and raffle prizes. Thank you to all the volunteers for all the hard work you do to build a healthier community at the Health Centre.

2014 Women’s Health and Wellness Workshop

The Health Centre organized it’s first Women’s Health and Wellness workshop last week. With over 30 women attending, the main focus was around Cancer Prevention and Influenza Education mixed in with some Nia exercise, Ageless Grace and delicious food. Many women were supported to make appointments with their providers for flu shots and cancer screening tests. Stay tune for our next upcoming workshop!

25th Anniversary Celebration

On Thursday November 6, 2014 the London InterCommunity Health Centre welcomed more than 200 clients, volunteers, community partners and staff to an emotional and inspiring anniversary party at the Goodwill Event Centre.

2014 CPR for Seniors

Our Seniors Drop-In participants learned, if you have 2 hands you can save a life! Seniors in the program learned “Hands Only” CPR and AED instruction. Each person was able to practice on a CPR dummy and left the Health Centre with a life saving skill.

2014 Safe Space Drop-In

This initiative provides health education, information about community services, crafts and activities in our Health Outreach Program, for people who are experiencing homelessness.

2014 Snacks, Homework, Activities and Crafts (SHAC)

This free after school program at Boyle Community Centre features physical activity, healthy eating and nutrition, wellness and personal health information, homework support, crafts and social skill development. In these photos medical students from the University of Western Ontario, from the Cooking with Kids program, are making pizzas with the students.

2014 Community Canning Program

This program is a new collaborative initiative of the London Community Resource Centre and the Middlesex-London Health Unit, and hosted by London InterCommunity Health Centre. Community residents from East London, Argyle, and Northeast London broaden their skills and knowledge of canning and preserving.  In turn, they will share their expertise as canning leaders and trainers next year in the wider communities with a focus on low income individuals and families.

Our Diabetes Team attended a Health and Information Fair at one of our local Mosques, providing information about our “Are you a Target?” program (https://areyouatarget.ca/) which is a screening tool for individuals potentially at risk for having Type 2 Diabetes.

2014 Dynamic Dozen launch

A partnership between several social service agencies has created summer jobs for youth. This group has been hired to provide healthy, fun and free physical activity throughout the London community using Flash Mob dance style.

London Clean & Green encouraged businesses to take part in the “20-Minute London (Business) Makeover” as part of community-wide involvement in the initiative.  Check out several Health Centre staff doing their part to keep our neighbourhood clean!

This group has been active in the London community, engaging seniors and exchanging culture through food for International Women’s Day and Seniors’ Month at Boyle Community Centre.

2014 Hambercola

The title of this theatrical production, is a play on the words Hamburger and Cola. The play is a story based on the journey from Iraq to the safety and peace of Canada. How nice it is to wake up in the morning to see the sun, peace, freedom and equality”. Written by Adel Taher, Directed by Khawla Shaker and supported by the Women of the World Program. Staring in the play is Khawla Shaker, joined by Mustafa Waleed, Isedeen Alawad and a group of students from Westminster Secondary School.

2012 Old East Village Block Party

On Saturday July 21 the Health Centre was pleased and proud to participate in the Old East Village Block Party. We had an information booth, talked about our new HepC Care Team, screened community members for diabetes, taught dance lessons (thanks to the AMAZING Dynamic Dozen performers) and enjoyed a poetry reading by members of our Grit Uplifted Creative Writing Program.  Here are a few pictures from that event:

2011 Seasonal Celebration at Lorne Avenue Public School

On Friday December 16, 2011 our staff partnered with community volunteers and local suppliers on the 16th Annual Seasonal Celebration at Lorne Avenue Public School. More than 550 adults and children participated in a traditional turkey dinner with all of the fixings. Special guests included the Chief of Police and the Fire Chief – as well as The Honourable Deb Matthews – Minister of Health for the Province of Ontario.

On Thursday September 1, 2011 52 community services and more than 650 community members gathered at Stronach Community Centre for the North East Community Fair sponsored by the City of London, London InterCommunity Health Centre and other community partners.

2011 Festival Italiana Fashion Show

A group of youth approached our Youth Outreach Worker team with the aspiration of coordinating a fashion show celebrating youth and multiculturalism. The youth applied for funding from the United Way’s Youth In Action Grant and much to their delight their application was successful.  A partnership with Festa Italiana 2011 was arranged and the Show will be held during the festival. The youth lead the various aspects of planning the event as well as the sewing of the clothing, auditioning the models, working within the budget, buying supplies, promotion etc.

2011 Dynamic Dozen Unleashed on London!

At Covent Garden Market shoppers and diners quickly learned that this summer they had better learn to expect the unexpected. The 2011 flash mob, Dynamic Dozen was unleashed on the city! These youth, hired through Summer Jobs for Youth, will be performing throughout the City of London this summer – bringing fun and a message of positive youth development!

2011 Volunteer Appreciation

On May 25, 2011 the Health Centre had the opportunity to recognize, in person, some of its 250 volunteers. Carole Anderson was our entertainment. Gifts were made by local youth through Youth Opportunities Unlimited. We enjoyed the opportunity to hear a bit more about the various roles they play and to socialize outside of our regular work environment.

Dr. Gordon Neufeld Visits London

On March 30, 2011, Dr. Gordon Neufeld, a leading child developmental psychologist from Vancouver, conducted a three hour workshop for 60 education, social service and health care professionals working with youth. The workshop was entitled Working with Stuckness. That evening, Dr. Neufeld addressed 270 guests at the Wolf Performance Hall with advice to “Hold on to their Kids,” and work diligently to maintain strong ties with them.

Lorne Avenue Seasonal Celebration

On December 10, 2010 the London InterCommunity Health Centre, supported by community agencies, service clubs, individuals, donors and the staff, volunteers and students of Lorne Avenue Public School hosted the fifteenth Seasonal Celebration – a free, hot traditional turkey dinner for more than 600 people!

Stride and Glide Skating Program

Funded by the Minstry of Health Promotion and Sport, and supported by The City of London, Source for Sports, One Goal and multiple community partners, the Health Centre launched a 12 week learn to skate program for newcomer youth in November 2010. Six weeks in, we held a skating party and media event to show off what we had learned!

Breakdancing Workshop

On Saturday November 27, 30 local youth participated in a 3 hour breakdancing workshop facilitated by the Youth Outreach Workers of the London InterCommunity Health Centre. The “Ill at Will Crew” (Check them out online at www.illatwill.com !) provided instruction in a positive, prosocial and very cool learning environment.

An Evening with Dave Bidini

On Thursday November 11, 2010, the Health Centre hosted Canadian musician, journalist and author Dave Bidini at The Aeolian Hall. Dave read from his newest book, “Home and Away: In Search of Dreams at the Homeless World Cup of Soccer.” Many parallels could be drawn between the lives of those who played at the World Homeless Cup in Melbourne in 2008, and the clients served through the Health Centre’s Health Outreach for People who are Homeless Program.
