Life as a Refugee: Event and Award

April 12th, 2012 in Archived News Items Email to a friend 0

The London Cross Cultural Learner Centre is celebrating World Refugee Day with our 4th annual community event entitled “Life as a Refugee” at the Central Library on June 20, 2012.  It will be held in the Wolfe Performance Hall and the Stevenson and Hunt rooms from 9am to 4pm. Refreshments will be provided. This event, well attended by Londoners in the past, is a wonderful informative way to celebrate the lives and accomplishments of these diverse and resilient people.

Artistic Director Majdi Bou-Matar will be our keynote speaker. He immigrated to Canada from Lebanon in 2003 and is the founder of MT Space Theatre group.  MT Space Theatre Group will entertain us with their Season’s of Immigration original performance. In the afternoon we will be having four educational workshops offering information on women, youth and LGBT issues as well as a workshop on the effort and determination it takes to immigrate to Canada.

At this event we will be presenting our Resilience Award winners. If you know of an outstanding individual in the London area who has demonstrated resilience, compassion, dedication and/or who has contributed in a positive way to making London a welcoming place for refugees, then click on our nomination form and nominate them today!

This year we are reaching out to professionals in our community who have close interaction with newly arrived immigrants.  We hope to bring awareness to people who are interacting with refugees on an everyday basis: i.e.  school boards, landlords, the legal system and the general public.
